I feel like at this point this book needs no introduction. I did find this brief summary from Scholastic though...
In this gripping young adult novel set in a future withunsettling parallels to our present, the nation of Panem consistsof a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying Districts, inthe ruins of the area once known as North America. In thisstratified society where the Capitol controls all resources,16-year-old Katniss and her friend Gale forage for foodin the woods surrounding their impoverished District. Themain support for both their families, Katniss and Gale areapprehensive about the approaching annual Reaping, whentwo “tributes” between the ages of 12 and 18 will be chosen bylottery from each of the 12 districts to compete inThe Hunger Games, a survival contest on live TV in whichteenagers fight to the death.
While you're reading this book think about how it ties into our Summer Reading theme "Beneath the Surface."
Is there something that isn't quite what it seems by the end of the book?
Do you feel like there is a secret that hasn't come out yet? (If you've read the rest of the trilogy pretend you haven't )
Here are some other questions you can think about...
How does Katniss feel about the country of Panem? Why does she need to maker her face an "indifferent mask" and be carful what she says in public?
Why are the 'tributes' given stylists and dressed so elaborately for the opening ceremony? Does this ceremony remind you of events in our world, either past or present? Compare those ceremonies in real life to the one in the story.
