The Hunger Games

I feel like at this point this book needs no introduction. I did find this brief summary from Scholastic though...

In this gripping young adult novel set in a future with
unsettling parallels to our present, the nation of Panem consists
of a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying Districts, in
the ruins of the area once known as North America. In this
stratified society where the Capitol controls all resources,
16-year-old Katniss and her friend Gale forage for food
in the woods surrounding their impoverished District. The
main support for both their families, Katniss and Gale are
apprehensive about the approaching annual Reaping, when
two “tributes” between the ages of 12 and 18 will be chosen by
lottery from each of the 12 districts to compete in
The Hunger Games, a survival contest on live TV in which
teenagers fight to the death.

While you're reading this book think about how it ties into our Summer Reading theme "Beneath the Surface."

Is there something that isn't quite what it seems by the end of the book?
Do you feel like there is a secret that hasn't come out yet? (If you've read the rest of the trilogy pretend you haven't )

Here are some other questions you can think about...

How does Katniss feel about the country of Panem? Why does she need to maker her face an "indifferent mask" and be carful what she says in public?

Why are the 'tributes' given stylists and dressed so elaborately for the opening ceremony? Does this ceremony remind you of events in our world, either past or present? Compare those ceremonies in real life to the one in the story.

To participate in this discussion simply comment to this post below. You can discuss any of the question above, if you would recommend the book, or if you decided not to read this book for a certain reason. Remember all comments are monitored.

If you are participating in the Summer Reading Program you must either post to this book or Wicked Lovely to get points.

Some brought in a written response into the library and that is fine too! Either way you are participating!!

Books for June!

Sorry for the delay folks, but here are our two next books! Remember, these will be the books that take us through the Summer Reading Program. If you have not signed up for summer reading, but would like to contact the library ASAP!!

Our first book was a suggestion by Michelle Embrey, Thanks Michelle!!  We will be reading Wicked Lovely, by Melissa Marr! This is the first book in the Wicked Lovely trilogy, Marr's 21st Century era Fairy Tale. Here's a little snippet from Goodreads.

Faery intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning twenty-first-century faery tale

Our second book will be the very popular, Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This is the first book of the trilogy that is now a movie franchise! A little bit from Goodreads...

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

I have multiple copies of these books now available so stop by and see us!! As always, each book will get its own book review post with a few ideas to think about. It will be these two separate posts that you comment on. You can read one or both selections, or you can tell us why you decided not to read them!

Later this week I will be posting more about how you can get more points (or drawing entries) for Summer Reading... the theme this year is “Beneath the Surface” so while you're reading think about how this could apply to these selections!

Any comments on this post between now and May 10th will be entered into the drawing. If you comment twice on this post you will only be entered once BUT if you comment on this post and the Jeremy Fink post you will be entered TWICE!  Your comments can cover 1. If you read it, how you liked it. 2. If you are not finished you can say... hey I'm not done. and 3. If you don't think you want to read it WHY....

Here's a little summary from Goodreads.com

A perfect murder
A faceless witness
A lone courtroom champion knows the whole truth . . . and he’s only thirteen years old
Meet Theodore Boone
In the small city of Strattenburg, there are many lawyers, and though he’s only thirteen years old, Theo Boone thinks he’s one of them. Theo knows every judge, policeman, court clerk—and a lot about the law. He dreams of being a great trial lawyer, of a life in the courtroom.

But Theo finds himself in court much sooner than expected. Because he knows so much—maybe too much—he is suddenly dragged into the middle of a sensational murder trial. A cold-blooded killer is about to go free, and only Theo knows the truth.

The stakes are high, but Theo won’t stop until justice is served.

Brimming with the intrigue and suspense that made John Grisham a #1 international bestseller and the undisputed master of the legal thriller, Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer will keep readers guessing and pages turning

How did you like the legal setting and language in this one? Did you think Theo did the right thing or would you have handled it differently? How does this book make you think differently about lawyers and the job they do? I will let you know what I think at the end of the month but right now I want to hear your thoughts in the comments below!!

From Goodreads.com

In one month Jeremy Fink will turn thirteen. But does he have what it takes to be a teenager? He collects mutant candy, he won't venture more than four blocks from his apartment if he can help it, and he definitely doesn't like surprises. On the other hand, his best friend, Lizzy, isn't afraid of anything, even if that might get her into trouble now and then.
Jeremy's summer takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious wooden box arrives in the mail. According to the writing on the box, it holds the meaning of life! Jeremy is supposed to open it on his thirteenth birthday. The problem is, the keys are missing, and the box is made so that only the keys will open it without destroying what's inside. Jeremy and Lizzy set off to find the keys, but when one of their efforts goes very wrong, Jeremy starts to lose hope that he'll ever be able to open the box. But he soon discovers that when you're meeting people named Oswald Oswald and using a private limo to deliver unusual objects to strangers all over the city, there might be other ways of finding out the meaning of life.
Lively characters, surprising twists, and thought-provoking ideas make Wendy Mass's latest novel an unforgettable read

While reading this book think about it's characters and what they go through to find "the meaning of life." What is the meaning of life to them and what do you think it would be to you?  What do you think the author wanted you to take from this book. In our monthly recap post I'll let you know what I think but for now please comment below to let me know what you think!!
