September Preview

Hope everyone had a great summer and is excited about upcoming fall!!

I just wanted to give you a preview of the books for September. I will be posting the reviews up once we are into September, but you can come in and grab a copy now if you would like!

This month we will be reading

Hourglass by Myra McEntire

From Goodreads.com

"One hour to rewrite the past . . .

For seventeen-year-old Emerson Cole, life is about seeing what isn't there: swooning Southern Belles; soldiers long forgotten; a haunting jazz trio that vanishes in an instant. Plagued by phantoms since her parents' death, she just wants the apparitions to stop so she can be normal. She's tried everything, but the visions keep coming back.

So when her well-meaning brother brings in a consultant from a secretive organization called the Hourglass, Emerson's willing to try one last cure. But meeting Michael Weaver may not only change her future, it may also change her past.

Who is this dark, mysterious, sympathetic guy, barely older than Emerson herself, who seems to believe every crazy word she says? Why does an electric charge seem to run through the room whenever he's around? And why is he so insistent that he needs her help to prevent a death that never should've happened?"

Ten by Gretchen McNeil

From Goodreads.com
"SHHHH!
Don't spread the word!
Three-day weekend. Party at White Rock House on Henry Island.
You do NOT want to miss it.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?"

Wicked Lovely

Here is the discussion post for our second book this month. Here is a brief summary from the author's website.
Aislinn has always been able to see faeries, and she has always followed the rules to avoid them. But when Keenan, the Summer King, pursues Aislinn, the rules that have protected her no longer work. Keenan wants Aislinn to be his queen, and even as she struggles to avoid that role, she proves herself worthy of ruling the Summer Court. But Keenan’s mother, the Winter Queen, will stop at nothing to prevent Aislinn from assuming her rightful place in the faery realm.

Again with this book try to think about how it could fit into our theme of "Beneath the Surface."  Some things aren't quite what they seem, especially when reading books with supernatural characters. Which characters did you feel were trying the most to be something they were not?

Here are some other questions that you can think about while reading...

Why did Beira kill Keenan's father and what direct and indirect consequences does it have on the Summer Court?

What are the signs that show Aislinn was meant to be the Summer Court Queen?

What is ironic about the fact that Donia and Keenan are truly in love?

To participate in this discussion simply comment to this post below. You can discuss any of the question above, if you would recommend the book, or if you decided not to read this book for a certain reason. Remember all comments are monitored.

If you are participating in the Summer Reading Program you must either post to this book or The Hunger Games to get points.

Some brought in a written response into the library and that is fine too! Either way you are participating!!

The Hunger Games

I feel like at this point this book needs no introduction. I did find this brief summary from Scholastic though...

In this gripping young adult novel set in a future with
unsettling parallels to our present, the nation of Panem consists
of a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying Districts, in
the ruins of the area once known as North America. In this
stratified society where the Capitol controls all resources,
16-year-old Katniss and her friend Gale forage for food
in the woods surrounding their impoverished District. The
main support for both their families, Katniss and Gale are
apprehensive about the approaching annual Reaping, when
two “tributes” between the ages of 12 and 18 will be chosen by
lottery from each of the 12 districts to compete in
The Hunger Games, a survival contest on live TV in which
teenagers fight to the death.

While you're reading this book think about how it ties into our Summer Reading theme "Beneath the Surface."

Is there something that isn't quite what it seems by the end of the book?
Do you feel like there is a secret that hasn't come out yet? (If you've read the rest of the trilogy pretend you haven't )

Here are some other questions you can think about...

How does Katniss feel about the country of Panem? Why does she need to maker her face an "indifferent mask" and be carful what she says in public?

Why are the 'tributes' given stylists and dressed so elaborately for the opening ceremony? Does this ceremony remind you of events in our world, either past or present? Compare those ceremonies in real life to the one in the story.

To participate in this discussion simply comment to this post below. You can discuss any of the question above, if you would recommend the book, or if you decided not to read this book for a certain reason. Remember all comments are monitored.

If you are participating in the Summer Reading Program you must either post to this book or Wicked Lovely to get points.

Some brought in a written response into the library and that is fine too! Either way you are participating!!

Books for June!

Sorry for the delay folks, but here are our two next books! Remember, these will be the books that take us through the Summer Reading Program. If you have not signed up for summer reading, but would like to contact the library ASAP!!

Our first book was a suggestion by Michelle Embrey, Thanks Michelle!!  We will be reading Wicked Lovely, by Melissa Marr! This is the first book in the Wicked Lovely trilogy, Marr's 21st Century era Fairy Tale. Here's a little snippet from Goodreads.

Faery intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning twenty-first-century faery tale

Our second book will be the very popular, Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This is the first book of the trilogy that is now a movie franchise! A little bit from Goodreads...

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

I have multiple copies of these books now available so stop by and see us!! As always, each book will get its own book review post with a few ideas to think about. It will be these two separate posts that you comment on. You can read one or both selections, or you can tell us why you decided not to read them!

Later this week I will be posting more about how you can get more points (or drawing entries) for Summer Reading... the theme this year is “Beneath the Surface” so while you're reading think about how this could apply to these selections!

Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer

And now for the second book of our opening month!!

A little blurb from the previous post...
Remember this book is one of the posts you can comment on to be entered in our very first giveaway! Since it's later in the day than I intended I am going to extend the time that you can comment on this book for the giveaway. Any comments on this post between now and May 10th will be entered into the drawing. If you comment twice on this post you will only be entered once BUT if you comment on this post and the Jeremy Fink post you will be entered TWICE!  Your comments can cover 1. If you read it, how you liked it. 2. If you are not finished you can say... hey I'm not done. and 3. If you don't think you want to read it WHY....

Here's a little summary from Goodreads.com

A perfect murder
A faceless witness
A lone courtroom champion knows the whole truth . . . and he’s only thirteen years old
Meet Theodore Boone
In the small city of Strattenburg, there are many lawyers, and though he’s only thirteen years old, Theo Boone thinks he’s one of them. Theo knows every judge, policeman, court clerk—and a lot about the law. He dreams of being a great trial lawyer, of a life in the courtroom.

But Theo finds himself in court much sooner than expected. Because he knows so much—maybe too much—he is suddenly dragged into the middle of a sensational murder trial. A cold-blooded killer is about to go free, and only Theo knows the truth.

The stakes are high, but Theo won’t stop until justice is served.

Brimming with the intrigue and suspense that made John Grisham a #1 international bestseller and the undisputed master of the legal thriller, Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer will keep readers guessing and pages turning

How did you like the legal setting and language in this one? Did you think Theo did the right thing or would you have handled it differently? How does this book make you think differently about lawyers and the job they do? I will let you know what I think at the end of the month but right now I want to hear your thoughts in the comments below!!

Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life

That's right... it's time for the first official book review post!! Remember this book is one of the posts you can comment on to be entered in our very first giveaway! Since it's later in the day than I intended I am going to extend the time that you can comment on this book for the giveaway. Any comments on this post between now and May 10th will be entered into the drawing. If you comment twice on this post you will only be entered once BUT if you comment on this post and the Theodore Boone post you will be entered TWICE!  Your comments can cover 1. If you read it, how you liked it. 2. If you are not finished you can say... hey I'm not done. and 3. If you don't think you want to read it WHY....

From Goodreads.com

In one month Jeremy Fink will turn thirteen. But does he have what it takes to be a teenager? He collects mutant candy, he won't venture more than four blocks from his apartment if he can help it, and he definitely doesn't like surprises. On the other hand, his best friend, Lizzy, isn't afraid of anything, even if that might get her into trouble now and then.
Jeremy's summer takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious wooden box arrives in the mail. According to the writing on the box, it holds the meaning of life! Jeremy is supposed to open it on his thirteenth birthday. The problem is, the keys are missing, and the box is made so that only the keys will open it without destroying what's inside. Jeremy and Lizzy set off to find the keys, but when one of their efforts goes very wrong, Jeremy starts to lose hope that he'll ever be able to open the box. But he soon discovers that when you're meeting people named Oswald Oswald and using a private limo to deliver unusual objects to strangers all over the city, there might be other ways of finding out the meaning of life.
Lively characters, surprising twists, and thought-provoking ideas make Wendy Mass's latest novel an unforgettable read

While reading this book think about it's characters and what they go through to find "the meaning of life." What is the meaning of life to them and what do you think it would be to you?  What do you think the author wanted you to take from this book. In our monthly recap post I'll let you know what I think but for now please comment below to let me know what you think!!

Rules and Guidelines

So we gotta have them... A few simple guidelines to keep everyone safe, happy, and reading! I'm throwing in a book review overview so we are all on the same page... If you have any questions feel free to comment them here or you can always contact me, Whitney, at the library!

Please give special attention to numbers 3, 8, and 9!

  1. Every month we will have 2 book posts that will include title, author, and summary. There may also be some thoughts and/or questions to guide your comments.
  2. You may comment on one or both of these. Your comment can express if you read the book what you thought, if you would recommend it, and what you would like to read next. If you would NOT like to read the book feel free to comment why and what you would like to see on the blog next month.
  3. Please keep these comments CLEAN, APPROPRIATE, KIND, and CONSTRUCTIVE. I will moderate each comment before it is posted so if you do not follow this guideline I will not publish your comment on the board.
  4. Anyone (regardless of age) who has an opinion on the current books may comment on that book's post. Keep in mind that most books chosen will be from the 12 – 18 age range.
  5. Any giveaways, special book club events, or summer reading related programs will be introduced and discussed in separate posts.
  6. Towards the end of each month we will preview the books for next month in a special “month's end” post.
  7. We will try to include books that will appeal to everyone's reading taste. If you feel that a certain book type is being neglected please feel free to suggest it.

**These rules are subject to change at any time, but I will always let you know if they have! If you feel that something has been left off please feel free to let me, Whitney, know!
